World Environment Day: Embracing #GenerationRestoration with Kaipara Moana Remediation

World Environment Day serves to raise awareness of pressing global environmental issues and encourages communities around the world to take action. This year’s theme is #GenerationRestoration, aligning with the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which aims to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean.

Through its Whenua Whānui Fund, Kaipara Moana Remediation, through exemplifies the spirit of #GenerationRestoration. By supporting community and catchment groups, schools, hapū and whānau in hands-on projects to reduce sediment flows into the Kaipara Moana, KMR not only improves the health of the harbour but also fosters a sense of environmental responsibility and stewardship among those taking action.

On World Environment Day 2024, KMR celebrates the efforts of over 600 landowners and groups taking action with our support across the Kaipara Moana catchment in Auckland and Northland. By working together, we are restoring critical freshwater, wetland and hill country ecosystems, protecting biodiversity, and building a sustainable future for generations to come.
