Today marks the beginning of New Zealand Conservation Week! 

KMR is calling on landowners and groups across the Kaipara Moana catchment to join us and ‘take action for nature’ – this year’s theme for Conservation Week. 

The projects that KMR invests in – to restore wetlands, fence off rivers and streams, plant trees and regenerate forest on erosion-prone land – create many benefits for nature.  They help valued species to thrive, protect and restore waterways and forest remnants, and recloak areas of the land that are at risk from slips, landslides and floods.    

KMR offers: 

• Free advice – we walk the land with you to discuss your aspirations and project options 

• Funding – KMR pays up to 50% of the cost of eligible sediment reduction projects 

• Support with group engagement and project management costs if you are a community group, marae, iwi/hapū or other collective 

• Planning and support – our Field Advisors prepare a plan to access KMR funding and provide support through the project.

As part of Conservation Week, we wanted to share some of our numbers.  

Just over 2½ years into operational delivery, KMR has supported over 815 landowners and groups to develop project plans and take action on the ground: 

 Jobs & Skills

• 228 people trained through KMR investment – many from local iwi/hapū  

• New work created in rural communities – equal to a full year of work for over 180 people  

• $18.2 million support for sediment reduction projects, supporting local, nature-based employment 

Engagement & Participation

• 1034 landowners and groups have expressed interest in being involved in KMR 

• 718 project plans have been completed with landowners and groups, with a further 98 in development. 

• 77 projects led by hapū, marae, community groups, catchment groups or other collectives are completed, in train or in development. 

Nature

• Over 1.91 million plants are in the ground or contracted to plant 

• Around 540 hectares of planting have been completed or contracted 

• Around 220 hectares of natural forest are protected or contracted to protect through regeneration projects 

• Over 810km of fencing is completed or contracted (the same distance as from Cape Rēinga to Napier) 

• Around 130,000 hectares are managed under KMR plans.
