Kaipara Moana Remediation wins another Environmental Award
Kaipara Moana Remediation is elated to be the recipient of a 2025 Kaipara District Council Environmental Award.
The Environmental Action in the Community Award was presented to Tame Te Rangi, Chair of the KMR Joint Committee, at the Awards ceremony today. KMR was acknowledged for our efforts to protect and restore the Kaipara harbour, both in the Kaipara District and across the wider catchment which spans other parts of Northland and Auckland.
Tame Te Rangi said “KMR’s mahi is focused on the moana, and the rivers and other waterways that feed into it. KMR was established as a collective effort, and to receive this acknowledgement recognises the excellent work undertaken by many, many landowners and groups. As just one example, KMR has supported almost 80 Whenua Whānui Fund projects to date, most of which are led by Kaipara Uri, other tangata whenua groups, whānau, marae trusts and other groups. Ultimately, it’s about landowners of all types taking action.”
KMR Pou Tātaki Justine Daw also thanked those working with KMR for the Award: “As one of the largest catchment groups in the country, KMR is working to support nearly 1,000 farmers and groups, and we continue to grow. This Award is dedicated to all of those landowners and land managers who are working hard to deliver real change on the ground”.
“To date, KMR investments have supported a wide variety of projects to restore wetlands, fence off rivers and streams, plant trees and regenerate forest on erosion-prone land. Together, these individual efforts have resulted in support for over 2.6 million trees planted or contracted to plant this winter, and almost 1000km of fencing – the same distance as from Cape Rēinga to Ōtaki near Wellington.”
In just three and a half years of operations, KMR has already received a number of awards. In 2024, KMR was named on the Next 95 list of national environmental innovators and was also showcased at the Ballance Farm Environment Awards in both Northland and Auckland. This year, KMR is in the running for the prestigious Earthshot Prize 2025.
