KMR supports people, places and nature

KMR supports restoration projects across the length and breadth of the Kaipara Moana catchment, from the headwaters of each river system to the shores of the harbour.  Both the environment and communities benefit when local landowners and groups participate in KMR.

As an environmental granting programme, KMR contracts directly with landowners (farmers, land managers, landholders, whānau, iwi/hapū, trusts, catchment, community groups) for projects that meet our criteria. We provide tailored support to reduce barriers to participation.

KMR invests in a range of projects to restore wetlands, fence off rivers and streams, plant trees and regenerate forest on erosion-prone land. These important actions create many benefits, including:

  • Helping valued species to thrive
  • Restoring mahinga kai
  • Diversifying on-farm income
  • Helping meet environmental standards
  • Increasing resilience to storms and other extreme weather.

KMR project funding can be accessed via our Landowners Grants scheme and the Whenua Whānui Fund.

Landowner Grants

KMR’s Landowner Grants support landowners and groups working on privately-owned land to plan and complete sediment reduction projects in the Kaipara Moana catchment.

What we offer:

  • Free advice – we walk the land with you to discuss your aspirations and project options
  • Funding – KMR typically pays up to 50% of the estimated costs of eligible projects
  • Planning and support – our Field Advisors prepare a plan to access KMR funding and provide support through the project.

Join the many landowners and groups across the catchment who are already working with KMR.

Contact our team if:

  • Your land is in the catchment
  • You have a sediment reduction project in mind
  • You’d like to know more about how KMR can support you

Whenua Whānui Fund

KMR’s Whenua Whānui Fund empowers collectives such as iwi/hapū, marae, community groups, landcare groups, catchment groups, kaitiaki groups, schools, trusts and reserve boards to create and lead sediment reduction projects.

The Fund can support projects on collectively-owned land, public land, and land administered for fish and game purposes, as well as privately-owned land where the landowner agrees.  The Whenua Whānui Fund can also contribute to holistic restoration projects that draw on diverse knowledge-systems to protect and restore the Kaipara Moana.

What we offer:

  • Free advice – we walk the whenua with you to understand your aspirations and identify project options
  • Funding – KMR typically pays up to 70% of the estimated costs of eligible projects
  • A contribution to engagement and project management costs
  • Planning and support – our Field Advisors prepare a plan to access KMR funding and provide support through the project.

The Fund also provides:

  • An up-front payment to allow the project to begin
  • Simple, plain English contracts
  • In-person support to accelerate restoration on the whenua.

Join the many groups across the catchment who are already working with KMR. Contact our team if:

  • The whenua is in the catchment
  • You have a sediment reduction project in mind
  • You’d like to know more about how KMR can support your group.

Our funders

Kaipara Moana Remediation is a decade-long programme to protect and restore the mauri of the Kaipara Moana.  KMR is a $200m programme, comprising $100m from the Crown through a Deed of Funding, matched by $10m each from Northland Regional Council and Auckland Council, as set out in each region’s Long Term Plan (LTP).

A further $80m of sediment reduction project activity is budgeted to be sourced in various ways from landowners, groups, industry, community and philanthropic organisations.  Much of this activity takes the form of ‘in-kind’ contributions of time and materials to KMR projects. To unlock a dollar of the Crown funding, a matched contribution must be demonstrated.  This funding model recognises that widespread action across the catchment is needed to restore the Kaipara Moana, and that everyone benefits from a healthy, thriving catchment.

As a Jobs for Nature initiative, KMR has a dual focus on investing in people.  As part of our work programme, we support people into nature-facing jobs and train and mentor them to develop relevant skills and qualifications.
