Kōrero Tuku Iho
The Kōrero Tuku Iho project provides a pathway for Kaipara Uri, iwi/hapū, marae, whānau and communities to explore their stories, memories, histories, values and understanding of the natural world and places of significance associated with the Kaipara Moana catchment as inspiration for the reduction of sedimentation. Through this process, Kōrero Tuku Iho will enable these communities to contribute to the regeneration and protection of the mauri of Kaipara Moana.
Whakatauira / Case studies
Through the Kōrero Tuku Iho project, up to three whakatauira (case studies) will gather local and cultural narratives and perspectives in support of KMR’s primary objective to reduce sediment entering the Kaipara Moana. The case studies will also inform the development of a ‘blueprint’ for local restoration that can be widely used across the catchment by Kaipara Uri, iwi/hapū, marae, whānau and communities. A call for Expressions of Interest to host case a case study was opened in February 2025, and closed on 1 April 2025.

Poutō Pātaki Kai
The first Kōrero Tuku Iho project case study uses a te ao Māori approach to restoring the health and well-being of the Kaipara Moana through the revitalisation of traditional food sources and ecosystems on the Poutō peninsula. Using the concept of ‘pātaka kai’ as a guiding vision for elevating the mauri of the Poutō Lakes and their associated wetlands, as well as other rivers and streams on the peninsula that flow into the Kaipara Moana, the case study lays the groundwork for reducing sedimentation by strengthening local interconnections between people and place, both past and present.
